HILLMAN — The Hillman High School marching band performed at the Michigan State Capitol on Wednesday.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to show all of Michigan just how great our local students and staff are,” state Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan) said in a statement. “It was an honor to welcome them to our state capital, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our students and our program.”
Hillman Band Director Ben Witter said the band was invited to perform at the Capitol.
Upon arriving at the Capitol in Lansing, the band first performed on the steps of the Capitol, then marched around the Capitol while playing a variety of songs.
After the performance, Cavitt gave the band a private tour of the Capitol. During the tour, the band toured the chambers of both the state Senate and state House of Representatives. The band was then invited to a session of the House of Commons, during which Cavitt introduced the band and other members of Congress recognized the band.
To commemorate the day, the band was presented with a certificate signed by Cavitt.
“It was just unbelievable,” Witter said. “It was a day the children will never forget.”
Mr. Witter said he was grateful not only to Mr. Cavitt, but also to the students’ performance and the support of the Hillman Community Schools administration.
“I am humbled and grateful for the support given to this program over the past several years,” Witter said. “The kids were great.”
