The Indian team will face Afghanistan on Wednesday in the second match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The match between India and Afghanistan will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the Indian capital from 2 pm Indian time.
India defeated four-time World Cup champions Australia by six wickets in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup in Chennai on Sunday.
Ahead of the match against Afghanistan, India batting coach Vikram Latur said Ishan Kishan’s ability to move up and down the order seamlessly has helped the team in the absence of Shubman Gill.
Kishan was selected as a reserve in the opening squad for the World Cup and was batting in the middle-order during the Asia Cup as Shreyas Iyer was unavailable.
With Gill missing the first two matches of the World Cup due to dengue fever, Kishan has replaced him at the top. Therefore, Latour said there was no need to have a specific conversation with Kishan, who prefers to be open anyway.
“He’s played as an opening pitcher in the past as well. So there’s no specific discussion about that. He understands the moment. That’s why he’s on the team,” Latour said. He spoke on the eve of the match against Afghanistan.
“We knew he could bat at the top or in the middle order. So, he’s done it before. So, I won’t discuss that specifically. But I think he’s going to do well tomorrow.” “I hope it will come out,” he added.
Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer performed well in Tuesday’s optional net session, news agency PTI reported.
They faced net bowlers as India’s main bowlers including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shami decided to stay in the hotel.
Shardul Thakur, who is not scheduled to play on Wednesday, raised his arms before picking up the bat. Skipper Rohit and Kishan took turns batting.
Kohli, Hardik, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav also opted out of the session. Kishan and Iyer kept a clean sheet against Australia and both will be motivated to perform.
Afghanistan lost their first World Cup match against Bangladesh by six wickets. Bowling (primarily spinners) has long been Afghanistan’s forte, and if Afghanistan is to make an impact at this World Cup, batsmen will have to step up as well.
The 2023 World Cup match between India and Afghanistan will be broadcast live on Star Sports Network in India.
