In a critical step for Amazon Climate change pledge As a result of this initiative, the AmazonFresh store in Seattle received zero carbon certification from the United States. International Living Future Institute (ILFI), the world’s first grocery store and Amazon’s first building to receive certification. ILFI received his certification in September, and he is currently evaluating four additional Amazon locations. These locations will achieve validation of their carbon reduction efforts.
35,000 square foot store Opening in 2022 on Aurora Avenue in North Seattle, it was built with sustainability in mind. It has many climate-friendly features, including a natural refrigerant-based refrigeration system, an all-electric kitchen and hydronic heating system, an electric vehicle charging system for customers, and low-carbon concrete floors. These features are hidden in plain sight throughout the store, and customers may not even realize that the floor they’re walking on has a low carbon footprint, yet this store still… We save over 100 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) compared to traditional stores. The industry standard grocery store since its inception.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our team and everyone involved in this accomplishment,” said Tony Hoggett, Amazon’s senior vice president of Worldwide Grocery Stores. “At Amazon, we are building a best-in-class grocery shopping experience, and as part of that we are providing customers with more sustainable options across our stores. Enacting initiatives that support Amazon’s commitment to becoming carbon is a win for the planet.”
ILFI’s Zero Carbon Certification is a globally applicable standard that requires combustion-free systems, reduced operational and internal carbon impacts of buildings, and measured achievement with proven data. That certification is an extremely rigorous standard for validating a building’s decarbonization efforts. To achieve this certification, Amazon Fresh store operations were reviewed for 12 consecutive months.
Lindsey Baker, CEO of ILFI, said: “Showing how grocers are responsible for all their carbon, from construction and materials to operations, is impactful from both a customer and industry perspective.”
In addition to the Amazon Fresh location in Seattle, three Amazon Go locations in the Los Angeles area, an Amazon Same-Day site in Sacramento, and the Seattle Climate Pledge Arena are currently on track to receive zero carbon certification from ILFI.
