NEWARK – The Ohio History Connection announced that ceremonies marking the inscription of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks as Ohio’s first World Heritage Site will be held Saturday in Chillicothe and Sunday in Newark.
A quarter-century-long effort to recognize eight ancient earthwork sites in Newark, Chillicothe and Oregon as one of the world’s most important cultural sites was announced on September 19 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Committee. The world’s largest set of geometric earthworks in Licking, Ross, and Warren counties was nominated to the World Heritage List in January 2022 as the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks.
The National Park Service and the Ohio History Connection planned three monument commemoration events, which opened Saturday at Fort Ancient Earthworks and Preserve in Oregon.
Saturday’s commemorative event in Chillicothe will be held at the Mound City Group Visitor Center at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, 16062 Ohio 104, from 1 to 4 p.m. The ceremony will include several speakers, including Chief Glenna Wallace of the Shawnee Nation in eastern Oklahoma. dignitaries.
Sunday’s events at Newark Earthworks include a commemorative program beginning at 1 p.m. at the Great Circle, 455 Hebron Road in Heath. Regular tours and lectures are scheduled at Great Circle and Octagon Earthworks, 125 N. 33rd St., Newark, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
There will be no golf at Moundbuilders Country Club on Sunday as it is one of Octagon Earthworks’ four open house days this year.
