Yesterday, Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Atiyeh extended his lead at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of the 5th Bahrain Amateur Open Golf Championship, currently being held at the Royal Golf Club.
Atiyeh shot a 4-under 68 on the second day of the 54-hole stroke play event, extending his advantage over the rest of the field to 3-for-5 on the night.
Atiye is currently 11 under par with two rounds of 65 and 68 for a total of 133.
The front-runner for the title had four birdies on the front nine yesterday, but also had one bogey and finished with another birdie on the back nine.
Qatar’s Saleh Al Kaabi came in second place.
He played a 3-under 69 yesterday, matching his Round 1 score for a 6-under 138 total. UAE’s Sam Mullane and Jay Mullane tied for 3rd place with a total of 3 under and 141.
Sam posted his best score yesterday with a 5-under 67, bouncing back from his opening day score of 74.
He made six birdies in 18 holes in the second round, but also made bogey on the 12th hole. Jay continued his impressive performance yesterday with a 4-under 68, adding to his opening day 73.
Jordan’s Moussa Shaner was in fifth place with a total of 1-under 143, but Ali Saka, who was in 2nd place after the first day, struggled with a 4-over 76 yesterday and ended up with an even-par 144. On to today’s final round.

Bahrain’s Yousif Ali Janahi maintained his lead with a total of 1 over 145, tied for 7th place, while his compatriot Fahad Abdullah Al Hakam was one stroke behind in a tie for 8th place with Alistair Hess (UAE). .
Bahrain’s Yaseen Le Farhar and Saudi Arabia’s Johan van Jaarsveld finished tied in the top 10 with a combined total of 3 over and 147.
Former champion Khalifa Al Merisi yesterday moved into a tie for 12th place with compatriot Khalifa Duaij Al Kaabi with a total of 4 over 148, while defending champion Ahmed Al Zayed finished 19 with a total of 8 over 152. It was tied for first place.
Following yesterday’s play, 50 players advanced to today’s final round with Bahrain’s Hussein Salem being the last to qualify with a total of 29 overs and 173.
The 5th Bahrain Amateur Open Golf Championship is a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2023 King Hamad Trophy, which will be held on the same Colin Montgomerie-designed 18-hole championship course from November 23 to 25.
Following the huge announcement that the 2024 DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour, will host its first-ever Bahrain Championship this year, the Bahrain Amateur Open will be offering additional bonuses.
The overall winner of the tournament and Bahrain’s top amateur players will qualify for the Bahrain Championship, scheduled to be held from February 1 to 4 next year, with a prize of US$2.5 million.
Additionally, the King Hamad Trophy winner and Bahrain’s top player will compete alongside DP World Tour Professionals in the highly anticipated tournament.
