An intriguing castle tucked away in the rainforest of northern New South Wales is on the market as one of this year’s most unusual properties.
Looking like something out of a medieval storybook, this quirky property in the Byron Bay hinterland is on the market with an estimated price tag of $995,000 to $1.08 million.
Not too dissimilar to a Spanish jungle castle in Cairns, the property blends into the rainforest with palm trees, vines and flowers growing above and around the residence.
Nightcap National Park is just around the corner and is said to be frequented by wildlife such as wallabies, koalas and black parrots.

To enter the site, pass through a castle gate with two identical towers on either side.
There are 5 large outbuildings in the middle of nature, making it feel like you have your own medieval village.
The listing states that the castle was built by “eccentric architect” Ed Kingsbury, who was also responsible for Mullumbimby’s Crystal Castle.
However, the interior does not seem very fit for a royal family and is in dire need of restoration.
The listing says it could appeal to architects, builders, artists or “just people with a passion for extraordinary spaces.”

“The building is solid and full of potential, but requires loving restoration to reveal its full splendor and is limited only by your imagination,” the listing states.
Behind the castle’s exterior, the listing for 166 Fox Rd shows photos of the crumbling interior, with chipped floorboards and tiles, peeling plaster and unfinished rooms.
The photo also shows a deteriorated kitchen, suggesting that the castle had been left unloved for a long time.
The property sits on 11.5 acres of land and has already received State Office consent for a single-family dual occupancy and two private road entrances off Fox Road and Masso Road.
A look at the property’s floor plan shows the current structure has the potential for six bedrooms, two self-contained kitchens and two bathrooms.
This castle home in Rosebank is 30 minutes from Byron Bay and less than an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast.
The property is being marketed by Katrina Ulyat of Elders Real Estate Lismore.
