ChatGPT became an overnight sensation late last year. So far, we’ve seen it on laptops, PCs, and even smartphones, but the scope of AI is constantly expanding. The most recent addition is cars. DS Automobiles, a Stellantis brand, announced that it has integrated its generative artificial intelligence model, ChatGPT, into its DS IRIS SYSTEM. This feature will be available for all DS 3, DS 4, DS 7, and DS 9 products.
Notably, even popular luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this year that it was testing the use of ChatGPT on its production line to speed up the process. Another major automaker, GM, also confirmed that it is looking into ways to integrate ChatGPT.
How does ChatGPT work with Cars?
ChatGPT uses language models to understand and generate natural, fluid interactions. It learns from vast amounts of data to answer a variety of questions and provide relevant information.
DS IRIS SYSTEM uses ChatGPT AI to provide an in-vehicle conversation experience. Like many modern cars, the car responds to voice commands. However, what changes is the quality and quantity of the response. Essentially, this integration turns the DS in-vehicle voice recognition system into a digital assistant for almost any question from the driver.
Users can operate the DS IRIS SYSTEM by saying “OK IRIS” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel. This enables safe voice interaction without taking your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel.
A new dimension of interaction in the car
The car’s maker says it uses AI to ask you which tourist spots you might visit in an afternoon, list the most beautiful pieces in the Louvre, and come up with quizzes on your favorite topics. or even children’s stories. All these ideas and many more can become conversation topics using AI in your car.
Olivier François, Director of DS Automobiles, said DS’ mission is to offer customers a unique in-car experience. As pioneers in integrating ChatGPT into the automotive world, they are creating fluid, intuitive, immersive, and accessible generative artificial intelligence.
Yves Bonnefont, chief software officer at Stellantis, expressed interest in how this conversational artificial intelligence model works. He emphasized that its interaction capabilities make him one of the most prominent applications of AI around the world in the past year.
Pilot phase and availability
DS Automobiles has launched a “SoundHound AI powered by ChatGPT” pilot phase within Stellantis to evaluate customer experience for the first 20,000 requests. The company claims that the ChatGPT and DS IRIS SYSTEM integration will be provided at no additional charge for six months if you start your subscription between October 19, 2023 and February 29, 2024. DS Automobiles does not sell cars in India, but its parent company is Citroen. If successful, the new AI technology could be implemented not only in Citroën cars, but also in other Stellantis-owned brands such as Jeep.
