Muharraq, Bahrain – Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has achieved prestigious Level 1 certification in the ACI Accessibility Enhancement Certification Program based on existing international best practices and recommendations. This certification is the result of BIA’s commitment to accessibility through strategies, policies, and initiatives that prioritize the safety, well-being, and inclusion of passengers and visitors with disabilities.
This certification is valid for the next three years and is compliant with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the 2019 ACI World Annual General Assembly Resolution, and international best practices and recommendations. More importantly, this recognition reaffirms the airport’s continued long-term commitment to prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity for all BIA passengers and visitors through a variety of initiatives. BAC commemorated this remarkable achievement at the terminal together with strategic partners and stakeholders.
The assessment is themed ‘We See You’ with the aim of improving the travel experience of individuals with hidden disabilities and ensuring their needs are recognized, understood and supported throughout their journey. This follows the recent launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative. BIA is his second airport in the region to introduce a worldwide program that uses a discreet sunflower symbol to identify passengers with invisible disabilities. By wearing a sunflower lanyard, individuals can communicate to airport personnel that they may require additional assistance or have specific needs that should be addressed.
