Bahrain’s Al Najma suffered their second consecutive defeat last night in the 26th Asian Men’s Club League Championship, currently being held in Kuwait City.
Najma, the defending champions of the competition, suffered a huge blow to their hopes of retaining their title as they lost 29-31 to Al Gharafa of Qatar.
Bahrain had previously lost 21-25 to Saudi Arabia’s Al Khaleej in the second Group A match of the preliminary round and were unable to come back yesterday.
They have only one win so far, against India’s Golden Eagles in the opener, and have only one match left, against Kuwait’s Kuwait Sports Club tomorrow night.
The match is scheduled to start at 8pm Bahrain time.
Najma trailed 14-17 in the first half and although they successfully fought back, they were unable to convert any important chances in the closing stages.
In another Group A contest yesterday, Khaleej defeated Kuwait 24-23.
Group B consists of Kuwait’s Al Qadshiya, India’s Sai, Qatar’s Al Arabi, Iraq’s Al Jaish, Lebanon’s Shabab Saida and UAE’s Al Sharjah.
After a rest day next Saturday, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on Sunday.
The gold and bronze medal matches are set for the following evening.
