Mark Webster described Beau Greaves’ decision to defend her WDF Women’s World Championship title at Lakeside and therefore miss out on the PDC World Darts Championship as a “gamble”.
When Greaves won her first world title at the 2022 WDF tournament, she averaged a record 92.02, dropping only one set in the entire tournament and defeating Kirsty Hutchinson in the final.
The 19-year-old also qualified for this year’s PDC World Championships at Alexandra Palace after winning the Women’s World Match Play in Blackpool this summer. However, the two tournaments to be held in December clashed, with Greaves choosing to defend his title.
The winner of the WDF Women’s World Championship stands to take home £25,000, but Greaves will need to reach the third round at Ally Pally to match that prize. In her debut last year, she lost 3-0 to William O’Connor in the first round.
About the latest Love the Darts Podcast“I don’t know if it was the right decision,” said former BDO world champion Mark Webster.
“The winning prize is £25,000. [the WDF]. There are never guarantees, but she’s a big frontrunner, right?
“It’s a gamble because if she doesn’t do well in the first round of the WDF, she will miss out on the guaranteed £7,500.” [for going out in the first round at the World Darts Championship].
“It must have been difficult for her to refuse to play at Ally Pally, because the matches she plays in other tournaments are not played in that kind of atmosphere – it is I think everyone agrees — and she almost dropped a couple more sets,” O’Connor said last year.
“But it is her decision. Every darts player is entitled to make their own decision and there will be no sanctions. She can return to competition.” [PDC] Next year is the women’s series. ”
I’m also talking to sky sports Professional darts player Laura Turner weighed in on Greaves’ decision, citing her age and the fact that there would be plenty of opportunities for this prodigious talent to make a name for herself on the Ally Pally stage. He said he followed Sherlock’s famous run to the third round.
“She found herself in a very unique position,” Turner said. “She was standing between a rock and a hard place and it must have been a very difficult decision for her to make.
“I don’t necessarily think it was a financial decision for her. She wanted to come back and hold the title.
“I would have liked to have seen her play at the World Championships. She had a very tough draw against Willie O’Connor in the opening round last year, but she still conducted herself very well and was a really good player. We made plays, and we know that one or two wins there can really advance your career in a lot of ways, and Fallon is proof of that.
“But she’s only 19 and still developing in this sport. That in itself is a very scary prospect.”
