It looked like Cleveland would tie the game at 31 when Browns cornerback Greg Newsome returned an interception by Lamar Jackson for a touchdown with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter.
But that’s when kicker Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point and the Ravens held a one-point lead.
But in the end, Hopkins was able to fully redeem himself.
Hopkins made a 40-yard field goal as time expired, giving Cleveland a 33-31 victory over Baltimore.
The Browns led the Ravens by 14 points twice and by 15 for most of the third quarter. The Ravens got off to a strong start with Kyle Hamilton making the No. 6 pick on the second play from scrimmage. Rookie running back Keaton Mitchell then scored on a 39-yard run to give Baltimore a 14-0 lead.
Odell Beckham Jr. then caught a 40-yard touchdown against his former team, making the score 24-9 at 12:29 of the third period.
However, Cleveland cut the lead to 24-17 on Kareem Hunt’s 3-yard touchdown and successful 2-point conversion. The club was forced to punt on Myles Garrett’s sack of Jackson at the start of the fourth quarter, and the game was tied.
That’s when Browns returner James Prosch fumbled a fair catch. The Ravens got it back at the Cleveland 12.
It took seven plays, including a defensive penalty, but the Ravens reached the end zone on Gus Edwards’ 1-yard run to make the score 31-17.
Undeterred, Cleveland’s resurgence gained momentum. With 8:57 remaining, Elijah Moore caught a 10-yard touchdown to make the score 31-24. Then, in the fourth quarter, Newsome made the No. 6 pick with 8 minutes and 16 seconds remaining.
The Ravens got one first down in four minutes of offense, but couldn’t do anything beyond that.
The Browns started with the 20, forcing the Ravens to use their remaining timeouts, closing in on the Baltimore 22 and sending Hopkins on a 40-yard winning attempt.
He succeeded in doing so.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson finished the game 20-of-34 for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also gained 37 yards on eight rushes, including a crucial 16-yard scramble on the final drive.
Jerome Ford gained 107 yards on 17 carries. Kareem Hunt scored a touchdown on 10 carries for 32 yards. Amari Cooper had six receptions for 98 yards.
Jackson was 13-of-23 for 223 yards, one touchdown and two picks. Jackson was the leading rusher with 41 yards on eight attempts. Zai Flowers led the way with five catches for 73 yards.
The Browns, currently 6-3, will play the Steelers at home in Week 11.
The Ravens, who are 7-3, will look to turn things around quickly as they take on the Bengals on Thursday night.
