Bahrain ISA Town – U.S. military personnel stationed in Bahrain volunteered at a local nonprofit June 6 to help staff a year-long construction project that includes a new playground for children.
More than 15 U.S. military personnel assisted staff at Bahrain Mobility International (BMI) in Isa Town, Bahrain, cleaning a playground and installing new turf.
“We are very excited about the playground,” said Zainab Radi, director of physical therapy at BMI. “I know something great will happen when the Navy comes here. We don’t have anywhere for our kids to play outside. We provide free education to children with disabilities. This is difficult due to budget constraints.”
Founded in 1979, BMI is a non-governmental humanitarian organization that provides speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other special needs services to communities in Bahraini. Foreign and American military personnel frequently assist children and personnel in the field.
Last October, more than 80 service members and civilians from multiple U.S. and partner militaries assisted in a cleanup and beautification project at the facility. Volunteers included sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, soldiers, and international military personnel assigned to the Joint Maritime Forces.
The U.S. 5th Fleet is headquartered in Bahrain and coordinates two U.S.-led international partnerships: the Joint Maritime Forces, a 38-nation naval partnership, and the International Maritime Security Building, an 11-nation coalition. .
The U.S. Navy’s area of operations in the Middle East includes 21 countries, including the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, parts of the Indian Ocean, and three critical choke points: the Strait of Hormuz, Bab al-Mandeb, and the Suez Canal. ing.
