Russia: Russia clashed with the International Olympic Committee on the floor of the United Nations before its 118 member states voted to adopt a traditional truce around the 2024 Paris Summer Games.
Two years ago, Russia voted in favor of the last Olympic Truce Resolution, but committed a blatant violation by invading Ukraine four days after the conclusion of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Relations between Russia and IOC President Thomas Bach have changed since then, with the Olympic body calling on sports organizations to allow some athletes to compete as neutral individuals without symbols of national identity. Although the situation eased, it has not recovered since then.
Russian diplomat Maria Zaborodskaya, speaking just before Bach at the Olympic Truce debate at the United Nations in New York, called the situation “totally unacceptable.”
“The height of hypocrisy and cynicism never seen in recent history is the illegal exclusion of Russian athletes from international sports competitions,” said Zaborodskaya, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
Only Russia and its ally Syria abstained from voting to adopt the resolution, while 118 of the 193 UN member states, including Israel, Ukraine and the United States, supported the text proposed by Olympic host France. Two years ago, there were 173 co-sponsor countries.
The Olympic Truce is a modern revival of an ancient Greek tradition in which warring city-states ensure safe passage for athletes to the Olympics. The event will run from July 19th to September 15th, starting seven days before the opening of the Paris Olympics and ending seven days after the closing of the Paralympics.
The discussion comes 21 months after Russia’s war in Ukraine began and six weeks after Israel and the militant group Hamas fought in the Gaza Strip.
hockey: Yannick Seidenberg, a member of the German national hockey team who won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, has been suspended for four years for doping.
Germany’s National Anti-Doping Agency announced that the German Court of Arbitration for Sport had suspended Seidenberg and that the court could appeal.
Seidenberg, 39, is a forward for the German team that surprisingly won gold in 2018 before losing to the Russian team. This ban does not affect Olympic medals.
NADA said Seidenberg tested positive for testosterone in an out-of-competition test and claimed he also used DHEA, another banned substance. A criminal investigation by the Munich public prosecutor’s office is “still pending,” NADA added.
