The players were heading to Baldwin.
Evert Public Schools Superintendent Shirley Howard issued the following official statement over the weekend:
“(Saturday morning) the varsity and JV basketball players were driving on their way to Baldwin for a scrimmage. Just past Reed City, one of the four players in the car One vehicle was involved in a serious car accident. All four occupants of the vehicle were injured and taken to a Grand Rapids hospital.
“Two of the injured were transported by air and the other two were taken by ambulance, all of whom are currently hospitalized. The district would like to thank everyone who helped both at the scene and in the aftermath. This includes law enforcement, all first responders, parents and families, staff, and many community members. Your comfort, help, support, and prayers have helped so many. was able to get through a very stressful event. Please keep the injured students in your thoughts and prayers, as well as all those affected by the accident.”
Baldwin athletic director and basketball coach JJ Eads said Evert is scheduled for a three-way scrimmage with Buckley and Baldwin on Saturday. He said Ewald’s players and parents arrived but then received word of the accident. Ewald canceled his participation.
Ewald’s coach, Chris Morgan, released the following statement on his Facebook page on Sunday:
“Several people have asked if there is anything they can do to help, if they can donate. Four basketball players were involved in a serious car accident. They have a long road of rehabilitation and recovery ahead of them. With the blessing of the family, I have established this GoFundMe account to help with the additional financial burden this accident has caused and will cause. Gas and food cards are accepted.
