The Consumer Electronics Show 2024, one of the world’s largest technology exhibitions, known as CES 2024, appears to have fallen short of expectations, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. Compared to the excitement of previous years, only a small number of generative AI applications were demonstrated this year. Whether it’s the meat grilling department or Samsung’s latest robot that lets you communicate with your pets, none of these gadgets have had the same appeal as his ChatGPT from last year.
One startup aimed to develop pet-friendly software, while another aimed to use AI to revolutionize the meat-grilling sector. Additionally, a prototype boxing glove that uses machine learning to enhance a boxer’s abilities was also unveiled. But these devices lacked the innovative spirit that defined the generative AI scene throughout the 2023 Hype Cycle.

Observers attribute this poor performance to the fact that ChatGPT was launched in 2022. Jay Goldberg, his CEO of D2D Advisory, said: “ChatGPT has been around for less than a year. Users are just getting used to everything. We needed silicon as well as software,” he added.
2023 was supposed to be a great year for investors who had already invested billions of dollars into generative AI. Uncertainty is very prevalent in the device space. AI gadget company Humane has opted to lay off 10 employees ahead of his March unveiling of a $699 AI-powered device to replace cell phones.
The automobile industry, on the other hand, is a notable exception. Volkswagen offered cars with voice assistance using ChatGPT technology so drivers could listen to educational materials while driving. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz created a virtual assistant that was vetted against Google data to verify accuracy, as there were several instances where ChatGPT went wrong.
Chinese company Mojie demonstrated augmented reality glasses with ChatGPT that provides information within the user’s line of sight. Meanwhile, Rabbit, an AI business, sold more than 1,000 of his R1 devices in one day. The device is similar to voice assistants from Google and Amazon.
He noticed a growing number of portable devices equipped with generative AI that could potentially work offline. Although CES 2024 was a short-term disappointment, industry players are confident in the long-term impact generative AI will have on consumer electronics.
