Yesterday, the election of a special committee to select members to participate in overseas events was a hotly contested election in Bahrain’s upper house of parliament. Nine members of the Shura Council have nominated for four seats on the nine-member Parliamentary Executive Committee, headed by the National Chairman. Mr. Ahmed Al Musallam, Speaker of Parliament and Speaker of Parliament;
The Executive Committee will review the names and credentials of 80 members of the National Assembly (40 each from the Parliament and the Shura Council) and will distribute participation according to their terms of office or invitations received. Last Tuesday, four members of parliament were elected without a vote to fill the quorum of members of parliament. However, it is a completely different story in the Shura Council, as many members were interested in the main executive committee. Sealed ballot boxes were brought in yesterday for use before the start of the weekly session. Leda Monfaldi, chair of the Youth and Sports Committee, and Leda Faraj, vice-chair of the Finance and Economy Committee, withdrew from the race before the ballot papers were distributed.
This left seven committee members in the race. Ms. Talal Al Mannai, Vice-President of the Youth and Sports Commission, was elected with the highest number of 34 votes, followed by Dr. Jameela Al-Salman, Vice-President of the Services Committee, with 28 votes, and Vice-President of the Human Rights Commission. Mr. Ali followed. Mr. Al-Shehabi received 27 votes, and former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ali Al-Aradi received 25 votes. Dr Hani Al Saati was defeated by only two votes, Dr Ali Al Haddad (7 votes) and Abdullah Al Nuaimi (14 votes). The first meeting was held this week following an urgent invitation from Al Musallam to divide the membership among participants.
Meanwhile, 11 members of the Shura Council were selected to form a special committee to draft a response to His Majesty King Hamad’s speech at the opening of the second session of the sixth session of the National Assembly on October 8. The committee will be chaired by the first vice-chairman of the Shura Council. -Chairman Jamal Fakhro.
