Hyundai Motor’s Grandeur sedan has made remarkable progress in South Korea’s green car market, with hybrid sales tripling in the past year.
According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA) on Friday, a total of 57,107 Grandeur hybrid sedans were sold in South Korea from January to November this year, an increase of 198.8% from the same period last year.
In the first 11 months of this year, 104,652 Grandeur sedans were sold, meaning hybrids accounted for 54.6% of total sales.
This is the first time that hybrid sales have exceeded half of Grandeur’s total sales.
Although the Grandeur Hybrid is more expensive than the gasoline model, it is gaining popularity due to its convenient internal combustion engine refueling system and good fuel efficiency.
The Grandeur sedan is expected to become this year’s best-selling car, with sales of both gasoline and hybrid models exceeding 100,000 units.
Meanwhile, the second best-selling hybrid model in South Korea was Kia Motors’ sports utility vehicle (SUV) “Sorento,” with 51,818 units sold. The Sorento Hybrid accounted for more than half of all Sorento sales of 77,743 units.
In the first 11 months of this year, 335,211 hybrid cars were sold in South Korea.
An industry official said, “Considering the current favorable situation of hybrid vehicles in South Korea, production is expected to expand next year.”
