The Stony Brook University Center for Italian Studies hosts Settimana dell’Auto Italiana — Italian Automobile Week.
Please note: The 17th Annual Robert D. Seth Concorso d’Eleganza Celebration of Italian Vehicle Excellence scheduled for Sunday, September 10th has been canceled due to inclement weather.
The other two events included in Settimana dell’Automobile will take place as scheduled. Both are located in Stony Brook University’s Center for Italian Studies, F. Melville Library E4340.
“Alfa Romeo: Designing a dream car”
Thursday, September 7th, 7pm to 9pm
Covering more than a century of Italian automotive history, this 2022 documentary showcases some of the most iconic models produced by Alfa Romeo and, with the help of experts from various fields, explores design, technology and more. , discuss key ideas in brand development. Light snacks, coffee and wine available.
“Vertigo: Manic Speed and a Night of Italian Theater”
Tuesday, September 12th, 5:30pm – 7:30pm
The students of ITL 411, led by Loredana Polezzi, Autosuggestion Super Nebula Termina Mobilism Hypersensitivity Mania, a futurist monologue created in 1907 by playwright and actor Ugo Farulli (1869-1928). With surreal humor, it pokes fun at the car craze that swept Italy and France in the early 20th century and captures the psychological effects of high-speed driving. This monologue will be read to students in Italian and English, based on the original text edited and translated by Andrea Fedi. Light refreshments and coffee/tea will be served, and a virtual exhibition about famous race car driver Tazio Nuvolari will begin.
