The Cowboys thought they were ready to play the 49ers. The Cowboys, like everyone else, realized that wasn’t the case.
The result renewed questions about whether the Cowboys have the right pieces to reach the goal they have pursued since their 1995 NFC Championship appearance.
Former NFL safety Donte Whitner spoke candidly after the game. Appearing on NBC Sports Bay Area, Whitner had three words to say:Dak Prescott is the worst.”
Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said that’s not the case on Tuesday morning on Dallas’ 105.3 The Fan.
“I fully believe we have a quarterback who can get us where we want to go,” Jones said via Clarence E. Hill Jr. Fort Worth Star Telegram. “Don’t get me wrong, we have a quarterback who can get there.”
Jones added: “Dak Prescott is take us to the super bowl. And that’s how it will be. ”
Prescott has been the starting QB since his rookie year in 2016. The Cowboys have yet to return to the NFL’s version of the top four.
In other words, something is still missing. Whether it’s Prescott, coaching or personnel, the Cowboys aren’t good enough to get where they want to be. And they found out just how far they had to go on Sunday night.
Regardless, Prescott will persist. And it won’t get any easier next year, when Prescott carries a cap number of nearly $60 million through the final season of his contract.
