Svensson defied the swirling winds to cover the first eight holes at 6 under and ultimately signed a second round of 65 at Royal Golf Club, leading with Dylan Frittelli and Joel Garback at 9 under. lined up at the top of the board.
The leading trio hold a one-shot lead over Spain’s Alejandro Del Rey, with former Ryder Cup player Jamie Donaldson backing up by another one, with overnight leaders Tom Vaillant and Julien Guerrier. , along with Harrison Endicott and Okie Strydom.
“It was a tough match,” Svensson said after the lowest round of his DP World Tour career.
“I played pretty conservative from the beginning and was determined to play for the big guns. In the first part of the round, every putt was a chance.
“I’ve been sick most of this week, so I’m hoping to get some rest and get my energy back.”
Frittelli birdied the final hole in darkness for a 68 and insisted he wanted tougher conditions this weekend as he seeks his third DP World Tour victory.
“When I got out of bed this morning and looked out the window, it looked like there was a lot of wind blowing, so I wasn’t feeling too excited going into the round, but I knew that if I played well, I could move up the leaderboard. ‘And then we get closer to the top,’ Frittelli said.
“I’m proud of the way I played.
“I want more wind. I like things that add an element of skill and experience. Last week’s perfect conditions in Ras Al Khaimah didn’t suit me. Everyone was making birdies on every hole.”
“I like the trick element and the little things that happen by chance, but I’m excited to play and compete.”
