Salt Lake City – Utah football junior defensive end Jonah Ellis He was named to the 2023 CBS Sports All-America team and earned second-team honors.
Ellis established himself as one of the top defensive ends in the country this season, earning recognition as a finalist for the Lombardi Trophy, the Lott Impact Trophy and the Ted Hendricks Award. In addition to All-America honors from CBS Sports, he also earned third-team All-America honors from College Football Network.
The Moscow, Idaho, native caused havoc for opposing offenses this season, ranking first in the FBS in sacks per game (1.20) and totaling 12.0 sacks in 10 games. He also ranks fourth in the FBS in tackles for loss (1.6) per game, 16.0 total.
Overall in 2023, he recorded 37 total tackles, including three pass breakups and one forced fumble, and in five games this season, he recorded a sack in four consecutive games and had multiple tackles for loss. Recorded. His 12.0 sacks are the most by a Ute player since 2019 (Bradley Anae, 13.0) and tied for seventh all-time in single-season sacks.
Ellis broke out this season against UCLA and won the Pac-12 Defensive Lineman of the Year Award and the Walter Camp National Player of the Week Award for his performance against the Bruins. He finished with 10 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, the latter the most by a Pac-12 player since 2017.
The junior played in 35 career games at Utah, starting 18 of them, including 10 this year. He started his career as a linebacker with the Utes and was converted to defensive end before the 2022 season.
