The FIA is proud to announce the entries for the 2023 FIA President’s Climate Action Award.
The Climate Action Awards specifically champion initiatives that promote sustainability and decarbonization across motorsport and mobility.
This year, the FIA received nine applications covering everything from racetrack biodiversity to green databases and ride-sharing. Today, we would like to announce the following participants.
- Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobile Club eV
- italian auto club
- Canadian Automobile Association
- German Motorsport Federation
- motorsport new zealand
- motorsport uk
- Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia
- Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation
- sweden busforetag
The winner will be announced at the FIA general meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan. A summary of the entries can be found below.
Promoting ride sharing with the Allgemeiner German Automobile Club eV (ADAC)
Driving alone not only creates more traffic, it also creates tons of unnecessary greenhouse gases and other pollutants. ADAC’s new digital carpooling service, ADAC Pendlernetz powered by twogo, aims to tackle this issue. It works by connecting drivers and passengers on the same route to protect the planet, roads, and customers’ wallets. The service was developed in collaboration with Schwarz Mobility Solutions and is available on the twogo app and web app. The club is already planning to use the event to reduce traffic around races such as the DTM race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria and the FIA WRC Central European Rally in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.
plant a forest of italian auto club
The Automobile Club of Italy (ACI) has launched a new sustainable initiative this year, replacing its print magazine with a thousand forests. The team members first came up with the idea after deciding to reduce the print run of the magazine L’Automobile and realizing that this would leave resources available to fund the club’s environmental projects. ACI has partnered with leading Italian company B-Corp to plant the forest and plans to continue the project over the next 10 years.
Gathering opinions from the Canadian Automobile Association and EV users
We know what the general public thinks about EVs, but what do EV owners think? The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) says there is limited information about the user experience of owning and driving an EV. That’s why we conducted a groundbreaking study of 16,000 EV drivers. The results showed that many owners would buy an EV again, but some were concerned about the charging network, especially outside of large cities. Others felt that advertising regarding maximum range was inaccurate. The study, carried out in collaboration with PlugShare, attracted significant attention, started a dialogue with the government, and garnered him over 40 million impressions on social media.

Building a database of sustainable initiatives with the German Motorsport Federation
The German Motor Sport Federation (DMSB) has developed a database of sustainable programs, initiatives, projects, events and campaigns. Associations and sports facilities can use the database to find ideas for programs to participate in, or to develop and expand their own. DMSB hopes this database will inspire further action and show people how much sustainability work is already being done within the motorsport ecosystem.
Balancing emissions with MotorSport New Zealand
How do you ensure motorsport racing is environmentally friendly? Motorsport New Zealand has devised an innovative new solution – the Environmental Sustainability Fund. The fund works by collecting money from event organizers for carbon projects.2 emissions. Organizers currently pay just $5 for club sports, $15 for races, and $30 for rallies, all of which goes toward supporting sustainable efforts of this type. In the future, Motorsport New Zealand would also like to allow individual participation and commit to an even greater environmental impact.
Measuring the environmental impact of motorsport with Motorsport UK
We all know we need to reduce our carbon footprint, but that starts with knowing where we stand. Motorsport UK’s Carbon Calculator is a new, freely available tool to help clubs measure the environmental impact of their motorsport events. This tool allows you to input data across five main categories, calculate emissions and provide reduction recommendations. This calculator also includes some preset data so that you can get a rough estimate even if your club doesn’t have all the information you need.

Air quality testing by Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia
The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RACWA) wants Western Australians to have a safe, sustainable and connected future. As part of this, the Club intends to help reduce harmful vehicle emissions so that current and future generations can enjoy healthier, cleaner air. The RAC Air Health Monitor (AHM) is an extensive air quality sensor network that collects accurate air quality data and presents it to its members and community in near real-time heatmaps. The club hopes that seeing real-time emissions will deter users from choosing to use their cars over other more sustainable options. Air Health Monitor was developed in partnership with Clarity Movement Co (Clarity), the world’s leading air sensing technology organization, and global engineering firm Ramboll Shair.
Realizing Vision 30 with Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is currently working towards Vision 30, a strategy aimed at transforming or improving every aspect of life within the Kingdom. Environmental efforts are an important pillar of our vision. With this in mind, the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) has decided to embrace green innovation. SAMF has increased the supply of renewable energy in its operations and invested in a fleet of electric vehicles for the transportation of staff and guests during events. The Federation has also pursued environmental best practice initiatives for energy and waste management at international events.
biodiversity Svenska Birsportforbandets (SBF) truck
We know that motorsport circuits are a rich breeding ground for competition, but did you know that they are also a rich breeding ground for plants, insects and animals? Sweden’s SBF will be the richest breeding ground for pollinator species in 2022 That’s why we investigated the three main tracks that live in the. The research team worked closely with scientists to examine the biodiversity of the Annebergsbanan in Halland, the Herges racecar track in Värmland and the Sundsvall raceway in Setna in Medelpad, asking: Ta. We develop solutions that allow these ecosystems to benefit and withstand changing environments.
