Maruti Suzuki plans further investment in Gujarat, building new greenfield plant and fourth SMG line
At the ongoing vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 hosted by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Mr. Toshihiro Suzuki today announced two major investments in Gujarat. .
First, Maruti Suzuki India has reached a non-binding agreement with the state of Gujarat to build a new car manufacturing plant. The new factory in Gujarat aims to start operations in 2028-29. In the future, the annual production capacity is expected to be 1 million units, and the total investment will be 350 billion rupees (excluding land acquisition costs). Details such as location and production model will be announced later.
Maruti Suzuki has also invested Rs 32,000 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) to set up a fourth production line, with an eye on expanding electric vehicle production in the future. It was also announced. Line 4 is scheduled to become operational in 2026-27. With the completion of the fourth line, SMG’s annual production capacity will increase from the current 750,000 units to 1 million units. Combined with the new plant in Gujarat, the total annual production capacity in Gujarat will be 2 million units.
Overview of new investment
Maruti Suzuki plans to secure production capacity of approximately 4 million vehicles in India by 2030-31 in preparation for future expansion of the Indian automobile market. The new plant in Harkhoda, Haryana, which is scheduled to start operations in 2025, the new plant in Gujarat, and the fourth production line at SMG will contribute to achieving the 4 million unit sales target.
Speaking at the vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Toshihiro Suzuki said, “We will focus on Indian customers and offer them a range of sustainable mobility options in this growing country.”
