Miami may have a notoriously poor reputation among sports fans, but a new study by WalletHub finds the South Florida city is one of the most sports-rich in the nation. .
According to the study, Miami ranks sixth on WalletHub’s Best Sports Cities of 2023, behind Los Angeles, Boston, Pittsburgh, New York and Dallas.
The study sampled 397 U.S. cities by combining results from previous rankings for each of the country’s five major sports: football, basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey.
To arrive at its results, Wallethub combined the results of five separate rankings based on each sport and assigned a weight to each category based on the total percentage of adults who claim to watch that particular sport.
It then created a ranking by rating each category out of 100 and “determining a weighted average for each city across all categories to calculate an overall score.”
Here’s how Miami ranked in each of the five sports.
- Football: 7th place
- Basketball: 6th place
- Baseball: 26th place
- Soccer: 7th place
- Hockey: 450th
Despite its low hockey rankings, WalletHub places the Florida Panthers in Sunrise City, giving it a low weight in this sport’s rankings.
However, Sunrise was ranked #9 as the best hockey town.
