Michigan State University freshman guard Jeremy Fears was shot in the leg late Friday night and early Saturday morning near his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, the Spartans program announced.
In the first reported article, Chris Solari of the Detroit Free PressFears suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg.
“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting peacefully,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. “There is still a lot we don’t know, but my focus is to support Jeremy on his road to recovery.”
Fears is a four-star recruit out of Joliet West High School, was named the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year and is ranked in the top 30 nationally by recruiting services, averaging 15.3 minutes per game. He has recorded 3.5 points and 3.3 assists.
Joliet was spending the Christmas holidays with her family when the incident occurred and was terrified.
A message from FOX Sports to Joliet police has not yet been returned.
Fears posted a photo his instagram story I saw myself lying in what appeared to be a hospital bed. The photo caption described the shoot as a “small setback.”
Fiers finished his best game as a Spartan player in Michigan State’s 99-55 win over Stony Brook on Thursday, with 10 dishes and just one turnover in the assist column.
After next week’s off, the Spartans will play their final non-conference game against Indiana State on FS1 on December 30th at 2pm ET.
