We’re in the middle of the NFL season. Now is a good time to re-evaluate the futures market. Today, members of Bet the EDGE toured the Coach of the Year Market.
Currently on DraftKings, the Lions’ Dan Campbell (+180) is the favorite to win. He has led Detroit to the top of the NFC North at 6-2. Miami’s Mike McDaniel (+400) doesn’t have any quality wins on his resume this season, which puts him second on the board. Thanks to CJ Stroud, DeMeco Ryans (+500) is his third, followed by Robert Saleh (+1000) and John Harbaugh (+1000).
Drew Dinsick (@whale_capper) has preseason tickets for a slightly older coach.
“There’s a sentiment in the mid-season column about Mike Tomlin and some voodoo stuff that led this team to five wins and maybe a matchup with Jordan Love, who’s not an NFL quarterback, to open the season. He would have won six games. Six wins and three losses would be pretty incredible considering he faces a lack of talent compared to other teams in the AFC.”
The odds are long (+2200) for the longtime Steelers coach, and Dincik agrees they should be.
“It’s really amazing that they were able to find a way to win games with such a lack of offensive power, and that’s kind of a Tomlin staple, and we talked about this a lot during the preseason. We talked about it. He hasn’t been recognized in this market so far, but if he gets some attention this season, he’ll finally get recognized, get votes, and be considered. Still possible. I think there’s a gender, but it’s a very, very narrow path. And I think he needs to thread the needle here to win this award. So I’m going to go elsewhere. I was going to look for it.”

Jay Croucher (@croucherJD) looked elsewhere and landed on the Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell (+1600). The Minnesota bench boss has the Vikings on track for a playoff berth despite losing all-world receiver Justin Jefferson and starting three different quarterbacks over the past four weeks. While the well-traveled quarterback stood at the line of scrimmage before each snap, he briefed Dobbs on the offense. Frankly, that in itself deserves voter attention.
“I think if Kirk Cousins were to play at a level that was borderline MVP voting and reverse everything that happened to this team and make the playoffs and tear his Achilles tendon and leave, I think so. I think he’s going to make the best case in terms of his ability if he loses to IR and then makes the playoffs. The question is, does that resonate with voters?”
Today’s consideration does not automatically equate to crossing the finish line. However, the schedule looks favorable for the Vikings, who are 5-4.
“The schedule is very friendly. We have a home game this week against the Saints, which is key, then Denver, home in Chicago, and the next week in Las Vegas. We integrate Dobbs and bring back Jefferson and Darrisaw. The next four weeks are going to be a very easy time.”
If they win three and lose one in the next four races, their candidacy will survive. His final three weeks will be a sink-or-swim affair, with the underdog taking on the winner. Croucher is excited about the prospect of that showdown.
“That’s what I like about this bet. He can take out the favorites himself. He gets Campbell at home in Week 16, then the Packers at home…if he If we beat the Lions at home and at that point beat the Packers at home, all things being equal, he’s going to qualify for the playoffs.”
This argument makes sense. The blueprint is there. All that remains is execution. What could be the problem?!
