BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Oregon Adaptive Sports, a pioneer in championing outdoor experiences for people with disabilities, is pleased to announce the start of its 28th winter season of adaptive sports programs. This year’s lineup includes an expanded range of skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing activities designed to accommodate participants of all ages and disabilities.
The season officially begins Monday at Mount Bachelor and opens Jan. 11 at Hoodoo.th Mt Ashland on January 19thth.
This season, more than 350 participants will hit the slopes under the guidance of OAS’s dedicated and skilled instructors and volunteers. OAS is committed to breaking down barriers and providing greater access for people with disabilities to experience the exhilaration of outdoor winter sports.
“We are proud to continue expanding our program offerings and continuing our mission to provide OAS athletes with quality outdoor experiences,” said Pat Addabbo, executive director of Oregon Adaptive Sports. ” he said. “Last winter, participation in the program increased by nearly 30%, and he expects it to increase by another 20% this season.”
New this season, OAS offers:
- To increase the availability of specialized equipment to accommodate a wider range of abilities, OAS has invested more than $50,000 in state-of-the-art adaptive ski equipment since last season. The equipment is primarily funded by grants from donors and community foundations.
- We will increase training for volunteers and staff to ensure a safe, fun and enriching environment. OAS trained well over 100 new volunteers at Mount Herbachelor last weekend.
- Increase scholarship opportunities so financial constraints don’t prevent participation. All of OAS’s work is heavily subsidized by generous donors, and much of it is provided free to the community. OAS awarded her over $200,000 in scholarships in 2023!
