After just 11 games, the Panthers will be leaving their head coach.
Carolina has waived Frank Reich, the team announced Monday morning.
“I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he would not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers,” team owner David Tepper said in a statement. “We would like to thank Frank for his dedication and service and we wish him well.
“Effective immediately, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as interim head coach. Senior assistant Jim Caldwell will serve as special advisor to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and assume play coordinator duties. Become.”
The Panthers traded up to select Bryce Young first overall and started the season 1-10. The team has struggled offensively this year, failing to score 20 points in all but three games. The team has yet to reach 30 points in a game and has scored 10 points in each of its past two losses.
As shown, Tepper was clearly dissatisfied with the direction of the team. by his outburst Outside the Panthers’ locker room in Nashville after Sunday’s 17-10 loss to the Titans.
Tabor served as the Bears’ acting head coach in 2021 when Matt Nagy missed games after testing positive for COVID-19.
Reich started the season as the offensive play-caller, but Brown took over that role for the first three games after Carolina’s Week 7 bye. But Reich got those duties back for Week 11.
This is another big change for the Panthers, as Tepper fired previous head coach Matt Rhule last year after a 1-4 start. Steve Wilkes, currently the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, was hired as interim coach and compiled a 6-6 record before being replaced by Reich in January.
The team will need to find another full-time head coach this coming offseason, joining the Raiders in 2023 as the first team to make a midseason change.
