Holiday traffic peak days identified by the New Zealand Automobile Association
The New Zealand Automobile Association (AA) has warned of peak travel days during the holiday season, with traffic expected to surge on January 2 and 3 as holidaymakers return home. Simon Douglas, the AA’s chief policy officer, identified Auckland’s densely populated north and south regions as key transport hotspots. He also warned of potential congestion in Wellington, although conditions have improved with the opening of Transmission Gully.
AA Recommended Travel
Mr Douglas advised drivers to leave before 10am or after 4pm to avoid peak traffic jams. He also suggested plans for a major government-led maintenance program that could impact traffic this summer. It also warned drivers of changing weather conditions and impending heavy rain, urging them to refrain from driving in severe conditions, allow plenty of time, and maintain a safe following distance.
MetService Weather Alerts
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heavy rain warning for parts of the South Island and Mt Taranaki, and additional wind and rain watches may be in place. Sadly, the death toll from road traffic accidents over the holiday season has risen to seven, with a woman recently losing her life in a quad bike accident in Waikato. This figure contrasts with 21 lives lost on New Zealand roads during the same period last year.
Increased activity in small towns
Meanwhile, one article explores small New Zealand towns perfect for road trippers and highlights the unique experiences they offer. Towns such as Mangonui, Riwaka, Pairoa, Sheffield and Thames are cited for their unique charm and foodie spots. State Highway 25A on the Coromandel Peninsula has reopened after being closed due to structural damage, leading to a surge in business in Tairua. There is more traffic in town and more people patronizing local businesses. Restaurants are flooded with reservations and have extended their business hours. The Tairua Business Association co-chairman is hopeful for the future and is looking forward to a busy New Year’s Eve with fireworks and various competitions.
highway traffic jam
Holiday traffic congestion in New Zealand has caused long queues and congestion on several highways, including the Auckland Harbor Bridge and State Highway 1. The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning of delays and congestion on the region’s highways, with heavy traffic expected from New Year’s Day onwards. Overtaking lanes on the Malamarua motorway were closed for safety reasons and speed reductions were implemented in the Karangahake Valley. Police and emergency services are currently responding to a serious crash in the lower Kaimai Ranges.
