PITTSBURGH — Freshman Carlton Carrington recorded Pittsburgh’s first triple-double since 1998 and the Panthers defeated North Carolina A&T 100-52 in the team opener Monday night.
Carrington had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in just 29 minutes. He made 7 of 12 field goals and four 3-pointers for the Panthers. Federico Federico recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Who was the last ACC freshman to debut with a triple-double? Dennis Scott of Georgia Tech, 1987.
Jorge Diaz-Graham added 14 points and Blake Hinson had 13 points and eight boards for Pitt.
“Carlton Carrington and Jaland Lowe…I thought they did a really good job in terms of protecting the basketball. They did a really good job moving their feet,” Pitt coach Jeff Capel said. Ta. “We thought we had room to act early. I don’t want to overreact, but tonight was good. We’ll study it, experience it and think about how we can be better. . What I need to do for us is for us to get better every day, and I think we accomplished that. I’m happy with how we played tonight.”
For North Carolina A&T, Kyle Duke had 15 points and six rebounds, and freshman Uchenna Kelman-Nichols had 11 points.
The Panthers made their final seven field goal attempts of the night, holding the Aggies to just 27 percent shooting, and quickly took a 50-15 lead into the half.
Pitt finished with a 58-28 rebounding advantage.
“I’m really grateful to the Zoo. They were incredible today. It was my first time performing in front of the Zoo and it was a great experience,” Carrington said of the student section.
The Panthers host Binghamton on Friday night at 7 p.m.
