Russian President Vladimir Putin gifted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a Russian-made Aurus car, officials from both countries reported.
North Korean state media reported on Tuesday that the Russian-made vehicle was handed over to North Korean authorities on Sunday.
Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister and a senior Pyongyang public affairs official, said the gift “understood the special personal relationship” between Putin and her brother.
The two leaders met directly in September last year when Kim visited Russia’s Far East and toured some of its major civilian and military facilities. President Putin accompanied him to the Vostochny Cosmodrome, where he unveiled two Russian-made Aurus state vehicles at the time.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the car presented to Kim was an Aurus, but did not specify which model. President Putin showed off his sedan and limousine to his guests.
The Central Scientific Research Institute of Automobiles and Automotive Engines (NAMI) launched Aurus Motors in 2018, when the luxury car made its overseas debut as part of a motorcade during Putin’s visit to Helsinki.
Originally intended as a vehicle for state employees, Aurus launched its first civilian model, the Senat, in May 2021. Production began last year in the United Arab Emirates. (RT)
