Qatar and Myanmar yesterday earned promotion to Asia/Oceania Group IV for next year’s Davis Cup competition.
The pair finished as the top two teams and qualified for this year’s Asia/Oceania Group V tournament hosted by Saudi Arabia.
Qatar defeated Mongolia 3-0 in the promotion play-off, and Myanmar defeated Laos 2-1.
This year’s Asia/Oceania Group V event concluded yesterday at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
Yesterday’s victory for Qatar began with Mashari Naif winning a tough singles match against Munkbaatar Badrakh 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Mubarak Al-Harashi defeating Oyounbat Batar in the following match. We defeated them 6-2, 6-2. -Up single match.
Qatar secured the victory as Issa Alharashi and Rashed Naif defeated Mongolia’s Sononpuntsag Enkhjargal and Undraf Prevdorj 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile, in Myanmar, Myu Pain Min got off to a narrow start with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Laos’ Saisaba Chansonpoo.
Sataporn Thinmalabong then defeated Myanmar’s Hein Latt Kyaw 6-4, 6-1, while Myint and Aung Myottan defeated Ananda Khanphomany and Thinmalabong 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Myanmar was victorious.
Also yesterday, Bahrain defeated Brunei 2-1 to take fifth place overall in the final standings of the tournament, while Nepal defeated Maldives 3-0 to take seventh place.
Macau defeated Bhutan 2-1 to be ranked 9th, while Yemen defeated Bangladesh 3-0 to move to 11th place.
This year’s Asia/Oceania Group V competition featured 13 men’s national teams from across the continent. Only two teams will be promoted.
Davis Cup is one of the premier world tournaments for men’s tennis, run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Saudi Arabia is hosting the Asia/Oceania team tournament for the third consecutive year.
This year’s event was held shortly after BTF hosted the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group III.
The two tournaments will be followed by the third consecutive International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Championship.
Two of these competitions are J30 events, with the first running from tomorrow until November 4th and the second running from November 6th to November 11th.
The third is the J60 tournament, which will be held from November 13th to November 18th.
All three tournaments are part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior, which features some of the world’s most talented tennis players between the ages of 13 and 18. Each event in Saudi Arabia will feature men’s and women’s singles and doubles.
