Ireland overtake Scotland with horror World Cup performance
The pool of death chose its victims. Ireland wielded the scythe most decisively. So much for a pincer contest worthy of a knockout opportunity, Scotland were swept away like flotsam on a sea of Irish green. If their victory over the Springboks was an announcement of their Rugby World Cup candidacy, this was the kind of show that would strike fear into future opponents, and perhaps their best performance in a win that lasted until the 17th game. Dew.
Just as they did against South Africa two weeks ago, thousands of Irish tourists made their way through the Parisian corridors to their second home, the lush and lively Stade de France. Ta. How could their fans believe now that there could be three more nights like this, with injuries that could be considered the price of Celtic’s colossal performance?
Next Saturday night will see Ireland take on the All Blacks, a formidable opponent to conquer. If this isn’t the year the last eight hoodoos end, it probably never will be. Certainly, it would take some aspect to dispel Emerald’s smile.

Scotland captain Jamie Ritchie speaks to ITV after the match
“Disappointed is a good word.” [to sum up the game]. You have to give Ireland credit – they were the better team that night. I thought it was enough, but I didn’t serve it tonight. I’m proud of myself for staying in the fight and getting some scores back, but I need to improve more.

We had two big games and we had to get one correct, and we didn’t get either one right, so we have to look at ourselves and think about where we can improve. I’m proud of the group and the way we’ve done it so far, but we’re helping each other through this campaign.
“It’s tough being away from your family and loved ones for so long and being with a group of guys, but I couldn’t have asked for a better group and I’m proud of what we’ve been doing. I’m really proud of what we’ve done together through this period/But we’ve got to get better on the field in these big games and that’s what we’re going to do going forward. ”

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton speaks to ITV after the match
“After the South Africa game I thought things couldn’t get any better but the fans proved me wrong once again. They were unbelievable. They’re coming to see us, and it’s important that we keep coming to see them. We’re happy to have won in the pool and against our toughest opponent in the quarter-finals, it’s important that we keep coming to see them. We know this is where we want to be right now.
“The way we drew three years ago made it a bit unfair, but this was the hand we were dealt and we have to be ready for next week’s game against New Zealand.”
