Not long ago, he was a refreshing young man. Now he’s the Greybeard of football.
Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson celebrated his 35th birthday on Wednesday.
“I feel great, I feel young, I feel fast, I feel confident,” Wilson told reporters. “all of the above.”
Wilson has repeatedly said he wants to play until he’s 45, but last year that seemed a little far-fetched. This year, it’s not that unreasonable.
On Wednesday, he reiterated his “obsession” and “passion” for the game, as well as his commitment to work every day to solidify his longevity. He also said that even at age 35, he still has “a little bit of speed.”
Coach Sean Payton was also asked about Wilson’s longevity.
“I’ve been asked a lot about Drew. [Brees]” Peyton said. “Then people will ask, ‘How long do you want to do this?’ [coach]?’. . . It doesn’t seem like the season has passed. Here it is. Here’s everything we’re talking about. You can ask relatively how long they want to play. Understood. Focus on narrow areas rather than broad areas, especially during the season. [focus]. When the season ends and everyone packs up and spring rolls around, you say, “How long are we going to do this?”It’s probably easier to answer that question [then], but now I’m just getting the next game. ”
Payton added that a quarterback’s longevity typically comes from having a “very dedicated training routine” that changes over time.
“A player like Russ doesn’t age,” Payton said. “He doesn’t look 35 years old. I couldn’t imagine how old he is. He takes care of his body. He’s very diligent and trains hard and plays at this level. I think that’s necessary if you want to do that.”
He’s playing at a much higher level than he was a year ago. The question is whether that will continue as he approaches and passes his 40th birthday.
Either way, he’s had a great career. From his 10 seasons with the Seahawks to how many years he’ll stay in Denver and where he’ll go next, Wilson’s legacy will be honored 35 years ago today with a bronze bust in the state where he was born. There is.
