Ruth White of Orono qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championship for the second year in a row by crossing the finish line on the third Saturday of the Northeast Regional at Franklin Park in Boston.
White, a three-time New England champion, completed the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes and 30 seconds. Zariel Macchia of Shirley, New York, won in 17 minutes, 13 seconds, followed by Ellie Shea of Waltham, Massachusetts, in 17 minutes, 21 seconds.
The national championship race will be held on December 9th at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Davis Cup: Jannik Sinner led Italy to the Davis Cup final with a 2-1 win over Serbia in Malaga, Spain, and consecutive wins over top-ranked Novak Djokovic in singles and doubles.
Sinner saved three match points and ended Djokovic’s 21-game winning streak in Davis Cup singles matches, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Sinner then teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego to defeat Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4.
Italy will face Australia in Sunday’s final.

European tour: South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence took a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Joburg Open as he bids to reclaim the title he won in Johannesburg two years ago.
Lawrence shot a 3-under 67 to move to 15 under. Dean Burmester (68), also from South Africa, was 12 under.
Australian PGA: Minwoo Lee extended his lead to three strokes in Brisbane, Australia, posting a 5-under 66 and moving to 17 under after three rounds.
Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino made six birdies on the back nine and moved into second place with a 64.
