Two-time world champion Shoma Uno set the world’s highest short program score this season in his first competitive skating in seven months.
Uno, a 25-year-old from Japan, landed a quadruple flip and quadruple toe loop for 105.25 points in his short program at the Cup of China, his debut this season.
He leads France’s Adam Hsiao Him Hua by 14.04 points heading into Saturday’s free skate. peacock.
Uno became this season’s short program leader, overtaking 18-year-old American Ilya Marin. Marinin scored 104.06 points at last month’s Skate America.

Marinin has the highest total score in the world this season, 310.47 points at Skate America, and would have won by 9.33 points at the world championships last March.
Uno will try to overtake that record on Saturday ahead of his showdown with Marinin at the Grand Prix Final in December. Uno has remained undefeated since winning a bronze medal at last year’s Olympics, including two world titles.
Two-time world medalist Roena Hendricks of Belgium took the lead in the women’s short early Friday morning, despite landing a planned double axel.
After fellow Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier gave up points in the twizzle sequence, Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Laga became surprise leaders in the rhythm dance.
Gilles and Poirier, two-time world medalists, have won their last four Grand Prix starts, including last year’s Grand Prix Final.
