The State Highway Patrol will be on the road this holiday season trying to stop dangerous driving before it causes potentially life-altering crashes. SHP joins road users across North Carolina in wishing you a safe, happy and grateful time with family and friends.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), more than 49 million people across the United States will travel by car. In anticipation of an increase in the number of vehicles on the road here in North Carolina, police officers will be out in full force with the goal of reporting zero fatalities.
“This week we continue our commitment to providing safe travel for our residents and visitors to our state,” said Col. Freddie L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “Our goal is to ensure that this holiday period is not scarred by avoidable tragedies when drivers make poor decisions behind the wheel of their vehicles.”
SHP is once again participating in the Thanksgiving “Click It or Ticket” campaign sponsored by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program. During the campaign, officers will work with law enforcement officers across the state to enforce restrictive laws across the state.
Drivers can help travel safely by following a few simple tips.
• Don’t drive distracted: Always keep both hands on the steering wheel and avoid all forms of distraction.
• Always wear your seat belt: Regardless of the time of day or your seat position, you should always fasten your seat belt before you begin your journey.
• Never drive while impaired. After drinking, use one of the safe driving alternatives and plan to end the night safely.
• Maintain a safe speed and reduce speed in wet weather. Please note that speed limits are set for ideal driving conditions.
• Before you start your trip, check traffic conditions across North Carolina at DriveNC.Gov.
If drivers observe dangerous driving, they can assist SHP by contacting *HP (47).
