Stolen Vehicles by State
Quebec stands out as one of the provinces most affected by this trend. The number of vehicle thefts in the state increased from 13,712 in 2021 to 20,834 in 2022.
Ontario is also at the center of this news. The number of thefts increased from 27,527 in 2021 to 37,041 in 2022. This gives a theft rate of 245.15 per 100,000 people.
In Toronto specifically, the number of thefts increased from 14,021 to 20,991 in 2022.
Newfoundland and Labrador and St. John’s saw significant increases in thefts. There were 222 cases in 2021 compared to 357 cases in 2022.
Prince Edward Island was one of the only provinces to see a decrease in thefts from 2021. The number of thefts in the state decreased from 118 to 113.
The increase in thefts in Nova Scotia is especially noticeable in 2020. In the state, 941 vehicles were stolen in 2020, 1,047 in 2021, and 1,196 in 2022.
The number of vehicle thefts in New Brunswick increased from 1,691 in 2022 to 2,054 last year. In Manitoba, there were 4,804 thefts in 2021 and 6,150 thefts in 2022. Saskatchewan: 5,688 thefts in 2022, up from 5,196 in 2021.
In Alberta, there were 17,777 thefts in 2021 and 20,725 in 2022. British Columbia saw only a slight increase from 10,662 cases to 10,742.
In Yukon, the number of thefts increased from 123 to 172 compared to the previous year, and in the Northwest Territories, the theft rate increased from 173 to 190.
Statistics released by the police
Looking at crime statistics released by Canadian police, non-violent CSIs (such as property crimes and drug crimes) increased by 4% in 2022.
Much of the increase in 2022 was due to higher rates of some property crimes, particularly motor vehicle theft, which increased by 24% in Canada and 17% compared to 2019 before the pandemic.
Theft rates (combined rates of motor vehicle theft, major and minor theft, and shoplifting under $5,000), break-and-enter, and robbery rates also increased in 2022 after decreasing at the start of the pandemic in 2020.
Auto theft was the largest cause and contributed the most to overall CSI growth in 2022.

When examining vehicle theft data, it is also important to check who has been charged with these crimes and whether the charges match the number of thefts.
5,149 people were charged with vehicle theft in Canada, with 5,850 people charged in 2022. Of those charged last year, 538 were juveniles and 5,312 were adults.
Quebec and Ontario, the provinces most affected by the rise in vehicle thefts, also saw many perpetrators of these crimes go through the justice system last year.
In Quebec, 919 people were charged with vehicle theft in 2021, but that number rose to 1,256 in 2022.
2,078 people were charged with vehicle theft in Ontario, compared to 1,991 in 2021. A total of 1,881 adults were indicted in the state last year, and 155 youths were also indicted.
These numbers are still far from balanced with Canada’s vehicle theft rate.
