MARQUETTE — After two one-point losses to the Traverse City Trojans in the regular season, the Redettes turned things around and won the Class A district championship here Friday night, 45-34. “Our defense has been the key all season, and it was successful again.” Marquette coach Tim Downs said. Senior guard Cory Gallow was Marquette’s defensive leader with five steals and eight rebounds for the Redets, who went 18-4. Ledet’s defense took control, holding the Trojans to just six more points in the first half, and Marquette held a commanding 29-9 lead at halftime behind 10 points from junior guard Colleen Michaelson. . After Garrow had one of her five steals, Sara Heikkila made a breakaway layup to give the Redettes a 39-16 lead going into the fourth quarter. Marquette will attend East Kent High School in Grand Rapids and will face the Rockford District winner Monday at 6 p.m.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s US 41 and M-28 bypass begins at the west city limits, where it merges with the existing four-lane pavement on W. Washington Street and follows the route of Whetstone Brook to connect with the South Front Expressway . This bypass eliminates the severe bottleneck caused by the right-angled intersection at the corner of Front Street and Washington Street. A luncheon commemorating the opening of the Market Bypass will be held tomorrow at noon at the Hotel Northland, with State Highway Commissioner John C. McKee the principal speaker. The luncheon, organized by the Marquette Chamber of Commerce, will be moderated by Marquette’s Don Pierce and will be broadcast on Mining Journal station WDMJ at 1:15 p.m. Marquette Mayor C. Fred Rydholm will deliver the State of the City address at the luncheon. The Rev. Glenn G. Weber, superintendent of Bishop Baraga High School, will perform the benediction. Chamber President Harlan Larson will introduce Miss Marquette Marcia Williams. and Mary Ellen McGuire, Miss Cliffs Ridge. State Rep. Dominic Giacobetti (D-Negaunee) will attend the luncheon.
