Winners were determined by the FCS Punter of the Year Awards national voting body, which is comprised of FCS sports information directors and national sports writers. Candidates were evaluated by the FCS Punter of the Year Award Committee on overall statistics and contributions to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net punt average, number of punts kicked down or out of bounds within the opponent’s 20-yard line, total punt yards, average return yards, and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must demonstrate team leadership and discipline and positively impact the team’s success.
The Cape Town, South African native leads the country in punting average and is a consensus first-team All-American selection along with the Big South-OVC Special Teams Player of the Year. In his first year at UT Martin, he led the FCS in punting, averaging 47.2 yards per attempt and setting a new program record with a net average of 41.48 yards. He completed 18 punts of 50 yards or more, including a season-long record of 70 yards twice. Additionally, 16 of his punts ended up inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, and only seven of his punts resulted in touchbacks.
