The prestigious award was presented to YASA founder and CTO Tim Woolmer at an event held today at London’s historic RAC Club.
The Dewar Trophy is awarded annually by the Royal Automobile Club for ‘Outstanding British Engineering Achievement in the Motor Vehicle Industry’ and is one of the most prestigious awards in British engineering.
This year’s winner, YASA, was originally founded in 2009 by Tim Woolmer as a spin-out from Oxford University while studying for his PhD in engineering. Now his 400-strong team at UK-based YASA is recognized as a world-leading pioneer in electric propulsion technology.
YASA was acquired by Mercedes-Benz AG in 2021 and is now at the heart of Mercedes’ plans to become fully electric by 2030.
The unique compact yet powerful topology of the axial flux YASA electric motor frees up space and improves electric vehicle design, as evidenced by the stunning Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven Concept unveiled earlier this year. It brings exciting opportunities. YASA’s current generation production product already delivers 250bhp from its 12kg electric motor package. But the next generation of his YASA motor promises to bring even bigger changes in performance and weight savings.
The Dewar Trophy caps another successful year for YASA, which recently secured £21.2 million in funding and grants from the UK Advanced Propulsion Center (APC) for the “development of electric wheel motors and active suspension handling systems.” won money. The project is part of the UK Government’s ambition to help scale up research and development in net-zero vehicle technology.
Tim Woolmer, founder and CTO of YASA, said: “Winning the Dewar Trophy is a great honor for the entire YASA team and is a great recognition of our axial flux electric motor technology. We are proud to have YASA at the forefront of the world. Together with Mercedes-Benz, we continue to reset the bar for the electric driving experience and spark an electric revolution.”
Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Dewar Technical Committee, said: “The Dewar Trophy was first awarded in 1906.The Trophy is awarded at the discretion of the Technical Committee of the Royal Automobile Club. It will be awarded in the calendar year deemed to be the year.” The list of past winners includes leading companies such as Dunlop, Triplex, Lucas, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and JCB, all of which exemplify engineering talent. One more company will be added. Dr Tim Woolmer, YASA’s development of the axial flux motor captures the simple essence of this special award: outstanding British engineering achievement. ”
“This is exactly what we have here today. This is a breakthrough in engineering that has evolved electric propulsion to the next level and has the potential to impact the cars we drive in the future.” YASA is also redefining the conventional wisdom in materials technology and manufacturing processes.” We congratulate Tim and his restlessly ambitious team on what they have achieved. ”

Chaired by Royal Automobile Club Chairman Ben Cussons, the committee includes engineering consultant Alec Osborne MBE; car Editor-in-chief Steve Cropley, motor racing engineer Pat Symonds, motorsport journalist Charles Armstrong Wilson, Professor David Greenwood from the University of Warwick, and past winners IQUAD Technology Director Mr. Dan Parry Williams.
About the Royal Automobile Club:
The Royal Automobile Club was founded in 1897 and its distinguished history reflects the motoring industry itself. In 1907, the Club was granted a Royal title by King Edward VII, establishing the Club as Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organization.
The club’s early years focused on promoting the automobile and its place in society, and evolved into motoring events such as the 1000 Mile Trial, first held in 1900. In 1905, the club held its first Tourist Trophy, which remains the oldest continuously held. Competitive motorsport event. The club promoted the first pre-war and post-war British Grand Prix at Brooklands in 1926 and Silverstone in 1948 respectively, while continuing to campaign for motorists’ rights, including the introduction of the first driving license.
Today, the club continues to develop and support the motoring industry through representation with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Motorsport UK and the RAC Foundation, as well as promoting its own automotive events, including the free-to-attend event London Motor Week. doing. Join us at the St. James International Competition or the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
The club also awards a series of internationally recognized trophies and medals for achievements in motoring. These include the Segrave Trophy, Torrence Trophy, Sims Medal, Dewar Trophy, and the Tourist Trophy, motorsport’s oldest still contested trophy.
