A 50-year-old Indian internal medicine specialist has been fired from his job in Bahrain for anti-Palestinian tweets, his employer in the Gulf state said.
The Royal Bahrain Hospital said in a statement on Friday that Dr. Sunil Rao’s tweet, which has since been deleted, violated the hospital’s code of conduct.
The hospital said in a statement, “It has come to light that Dr. Sunil Rao, who works as an internal medicine specialist, has been posting tweets attacking society on social media.”
“We want to confirm that his tweets and ideology are personal and do not reflect the opinions or values of the hospital.”
The hospital announced that it had taken the necessary legal action and that his employment had been terminated with immediate effect.
Similar cases of dismissal have been reported in the Gulf region, primarily for making statements deemed to be Islamophobic on social media.
Dr. Rao’s remarks came days after major conflicts erupted in the Middle East following attacks on Israel by Gaza-based Hamas militants.
