Andalusia, Spain – Texas A&M Men’s Golf Sophomore Jaime Montojo He will compete in the Estrella Damm NA Andalusia Masters on Thursday at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, earning an amateur exemption and making his first appearance in a DP World Tour event.
“It’s exciting,” Montojo said. “I saw 11 players in the top 100 in the world rankings, and there are some really good players in this event. Two or three have played in the Ryder Cup. I I’m going to learn as much as I can from the best. ”
Montojo will be joined by fellow Spanish Aggies Adri Arnaus and Nacho Elvira and Johannes Wiermann in the tournament, which runs through Sunday. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is Robert Trent’s Jones course located just north of Gibraltar. For this event, the circuit will play as a par 72 with a length of 7,099 yards.
“It’s going to be amazing,” Montojo said. “This is the course I’m a member of. It’s where I spent all summer. I know the course very well, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
The Madrid native is coming off an incredible summer, winning the European Amateur Team Championship and tying for the 13th time.th Won the European Amateur Championship and advanced to the round of 64 in the Amateur Championship.
“Jaime is one of the best amateurs in Spain,” said Aggie head coach. Brian Cautan Said. “He’s excited to be competing in a DP event on a golf course he’s played on several times. It’s always great when players get a chance to play on that stage. It’s great for them. It just helps them and gives them more energy to grow and get better and pursue their goals. ”
Montojo opened the 2023-24 fall season with a third-place finish at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills. He also finished in the top 25 at the Talent-rich SEC Match Play and the Ben Hogan College Invitational.
He had a successful rookie season, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors twice in 2022-2023. Montojo competed in 10 tournaments for a total of 28 rounds. He posted a scoring average of 71.93, including 0.57 against par, and profited from three top-10 finishes. He helped A&M win the team title with an eighth-place finish at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate Championship, and earned all-tournament recognition with a fourth-place finish at the Louisiana Classic.
