BOCA RATON, Fla. — Padraig Harrington ran away at the TimberTech Championship on Sunday to win his second PGA Tour Champions title of the year, birdieing six of the first seven holes for a seven-shot victory.
Harrington, who was one stroke ahead after opening rounds of 67 and 66 at Broken Sound’s Old Course, was playing the second of three Charles Schwab Cup playoffs and was 7 under in the final round of the tournament in Florida. He shot a 64 and finished at 16 under.
“You want to be in contention, and when you’re out there you want to handle pressure and tension,” Harrington said. “This is why we do this. This is why I still have days like this at 52 years old.”
The 52-year-old Irishman has six Champions wins and also won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in June. He is scheduled to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame next year.
Bernhard Langer, the 66-year-old German star with a tour record of 46 wins, has qualified for next week’s season finale, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, and is at 9 under par with Charlie Wie, who has completed all tournaments on tour. He tied for 2nd place. exemption for next year. Langer, last year’s winner at Broken Sound, had a double bogey on 17 for a 70, but Wisconsin finished with a bogey-free 64.
Ernie Els and Shane Birch each shot 70 and were 8 under.
The top 36 players in the Cup standings qualified for the season finale in Phoenix and earned a full exemption for next season. Wi jumped from 54th to 35th, with Rob Labritz in 36th. Kevin Sutherland withdrew due to a back problem, dropping from 34th to 41st.
Steve Stricker missed the tournament. The six-time winner closed out the Charles Schwab Cup this season. Langer is second in the rankings and Harrington is third.
Next year, the second playoff event will have a new sponsor and be held in Arkansas.
