Simone Biles continued her impressive return from a two-year hiatus from competing in gymnastics, playing a key role in the U.S.’s historic victory in the women’s team final on Wednesday, earning the 26-year-old her 20th world championship gold medal. .
Biles’ impressive floor routine helped the United States win its seventh consecutive world title in the women’s team event at the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.
Brazil took second place, winning the country’s first world championship medal in women’s gymnastics, while France took third place.
Biles, a seven-time Olympic medalist, competed in the team final along with teammates Sky Blakey, Series Jones, Jocelyn Roberson and Lian Wong. But Roberson, who is training with Biles in Texas, suffered a heartbreaking injury to his ankle during warm-ups.
Wong filled the void left by Roberson by competing on vault and floor, where the 20-year-old was not originally scheduled to compete.
Biles scored a 14.800 on vault, 14.466 on bars and 14.300 on beam in the first three apparatus.
The 26-year-old was the last member of the U.S. team to compete in the floor division, knowing that her stellar performance would earn her and her teammates another gold medal.
Biles, who was all smiles throughout her routine, performed the twists and turns with elan and few mistakes, and exuded confidence when the judges awarded her a score of 15.166.
The U.S. team earned a total score of 167.729 points and won by just 2.199 points.
USA Gymnastics wrote in a congratulatory message on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the U.S. women’s team is in a “league of its own.”
Biles currently has 26 medals at the World Championships, including 20 gold, three silver, and three bronze.
American gymnasts are now tied with Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo for the most medals (33) through the Olympics and World Championships.
This was a momentous event for Biles, who returned to this place. She made her world championship debut in 2013, when the American won gold in the individual all-around and floor exercise, silver on vault and bronze on beam.
In the decade since, Biles has become the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history and one of the sport’s greats.
