Travel to Canada by Air by Non-Residents
In September, the number of non-residents arriving at Canadian airports equipped with primary screening kiosks (PIKs) totaled 942,600, an increase of 29.3% from September 2022. This includes both international (509,400) and US (433,200) arrivals. .
Excluding data from Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1 from total arrivals (see note to readers), non-resident arrivals in September 2023 will be the same as pre-pandemic arrivals in September 2019. 87.0% of the total number of patients have been recovered. This was up from a recovery rate of 81.6%. Observed in August 2023.

Travel to Canada by car for US residents
In September, the number of U.S. resident trips that entered Canada by motor vehicle via land ports with the Integrated Primary Inspection Line (IPIL) application reached 1.2 million, an increase of 824,400 recorded in September 2022. The number of cases increased from The total number of arrivals by car in September 2023 reached 96.5% of the number of arrivals observed in September 2019. This is higher than the recovery rate of 74.8% recorded in August 2023.
On September 1, the Friday before the Labor Day long weekend in 2023, 97,600 U.S. residents arrived, an increase of 92.3% compared to the average of the subsequent four Fridays in September 2023. .

Round-trip air travel for Canadian residents
In September, the number of Canadian residents returning from abroad using airports equipped with PIK reached 1.3 million, an increase of 17.6% from September 2022.
Excluding arrivals at Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1 from the total number of arrivals (see note to readers), the 951,000 round-trip trips in September 2023 is the same as the pre-pandemic number observed in September 2019. It was equivalent to 100.0% of the level. This increased more than the recovery rate. 98.7% observed in August 2023.

Round trip by car for Canadian residents
In September, the number of return motor vehicle trips by Canadian residents who visited the United States via IPIL-equipped land ports totaled 2 million, compared to 1.4 million in the same month last year, an increase of 37.0%.
As of September 2023, the recovery rate for return motor vehicle trips by Canadian residents was 85.8% of the 2.3 million trips observed in the same month in 2019. This was an increase from the 84.7% recovery rate recorded in August 2023.

Note to readers
This release reveals for the first time the number of international arrivals to Canada for September 2023. Complete base month numbers for September will be available with the release of Travel between Canada and the rest of the world on November 23, 2023.
All air arrivals are from commercial aircraft and are generated using primary inspection kiosk (PIK) data only. His PIK was deployed at Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1 on June 22, 2021, and as of July 2021, these arrivals are included in the total count, resulting in improved coverage . In 2022, PIK accounted for approximately 92% of civil aviation arrivals.
The number of arrivals entering the country by motor vehicle through land ports with automated integrated primary inspection line (IPIL) systems represents a portion of the trips of U.S. residents and the return trips of Canadian residents by motor vehicle. In 2022, IPIL land ports accounted for approximately 89% of all vehicle entries.
In January 2022, some IPIL ports switched mode from land to sea. Arrivals at these ports in 2019 accounted for a small portion (0.7%) of all arrivals entering or returning to Canada by motor vehicle.
