A 17-year-old high school student in Louisiana was stripped of his scholarship after a video of him dancing at a party was shared on social media.
Kaylee Timonet, a senior at Walker High School, was photographed at a private event at Livingston Parish Country. The clip showed her dancing behind her twerking friend. After the video was shared on social media, Walker High School’s principal said he was revoking her leadership role and support for her scholarship application, the Guardian reported.
In an interview with Unfiltered with Kiran, Timonet revealed that he was called to the principal’s office and made to watch a dance video.
“I cried even more because they basically said that I should be ashamed of myself and that they were worried about what would happen after my death if I wasn’t basically living up to God’s ideals.” Timone told Unfiltered with Kiran. Furthermore, she added: “I felt like my life was over. What I’ve always worked hard for since I was little is always worked hard in school. To be Student of the Year, or at least to have that chance, is something I’ve always worked hard for. That was my main goal. I’m starting university in January this year. I finished my job in December, so I was shocked.”
Kaylee’s mother, Rachel Timonet, met privately with the principal because she felt left out of the initial discussions with her daughter. She also questioned her principal for questioning her daughter’s religious beliefs.
The school community has come out in support of Timonet, selling T-shirts with the slogans “Let the Girl Dance” and “I Stand with Kaylee Timonet,” according to the New York Post. Timonet says her community has supported her and helped her get through this unpleasant incident.
