Gen Z comes up with new trends every week, and every week new terms start making waves on the internet. Now, a new walking trend has attracted ambitious TikTokers. Let’s find out what it is all about.
Who started this trend?
To tell you the truth, it all started by chance. Coincidentally, podcaster Maddy Maio ignited the silent walking trend. In a TikTok upload, she shared her own account of herself walking outside without being disturbed. Despite some initial hesitation, she found that the stillness of walking quietly helped her develop a deeper connection with her inner self and get in touch with the universe and intuition.
What is silent walking?
Known for trailblazing trends, Gen Z is now championing viral movements within their ranks. Current topics revolve around silent walking. Silent walking is the practice of forgetting all technological diversions and going for a walk without using your phone. This trend is rapidly gaining momentum, especially among younger viewers on the internet.
The habit of walking in silence gave Maio the clarity she craved. Once she removed all her distractions, she encountered an influx of creative ideas as the fog in her mind cleared.
When was this term first popularized?
Maio came into the spotlight with Silent Walking, a concept previously introduced by New York City influencer Ariel Lorre. Rolle pointed to the grounding effect of walking quietly, emphasizing the heightened sensory experience. Her goal was to establish silent walking as a new trend, reminiscent of the “hot girl walk” that gained popularity during her lockdown period.

While the majority praises its benefits, some are intrigued that the act of walking without technology would be perceived as revolutionary. In addition to impacting health, it also distracts pedestrians, as walking down the road towards the screen increases the risk of injury and accidents.
In fact, the New South Wales (NSW) government went so far as to ban the use of phones in public high schools to prevent students from falling behind.
How did the internet react to this new trend?
While many people were impressed by the idea, there were also a flood of commenters who thought the trend was completely unnecessary. Influencers from various platforms shared their thoughts on this trend and what it means for the younger generation. However, most of these opinions did not support this trend. People didn’t think “silent walking” needed to be another viral trend, but for many, it seemed like the practice of this trend had proven to be worthwhile.
Many of this trend’s critics find it ironic that people who are into this new trend are photographing themselves while taking walks, perhaps defeating the whole purpose of this trend. We believe that
